Chart Updates: A Critical Step for Safe Navigation
Keeping electronic charts up to date is one of the simplest ways to improve safety onboard. This applies to MFDs from brands such as Raymarine, Furuno and Simrad, and also to navigation software installed on bridge computers, including Maxi TimeZero, TZ Navigator and professional ECDIS platforms such as Transas.
Why Update Before the Season?
Harbour layouts, buoyage, restricted areas, routing recommendations and chart corrections can change between seasons. An outdated chart package may still display the vessel position correctly, but it may not reflect the latest navigational information. For captains and owners, a pre-season chart review is therefore part of responsible vessel preparation.
TimeZero Update Process
- Open the About TimeZero menu.
- Locate the License ID.
- Check the ChartLog for the name and version of the currently installed chart.
- Confirm with the supplier whether a newer chart version is available.
- Obtain the correct unlock codes and download links.
- Install, verify coverage and keep a record of the update for the vessel’s documentation.

Benefits of Current Electronic Charts
- Improved route planning accuracy.
- More reliable information about marine traffic schemes, dangers and navigational changes.
- Better preparation for audits, charter operation and international safety expectations.
Navigation software maintenance should be treated with the same discipline as mechanical and electrical maintenance. Do not leave chart updates until the day of departure.
