Modernising Electrical Systems on Classic Sailing Yachts
Working on historic and classic yachts requires care, patience, and technical judgement. Integrating modern electrical and electronic systems without compromising the vessel’s original structure demands a deep understanding of onboard installations and the realities of marine service.
In this project, we carried out several interventions to improve the performance, reliability, and safety of the electrical system on an almost century-old sailing yacht.
Issues Found in the Electrical Installation
Over time, electrical systems on classic vessels can deteriorate due to ageing materials, previous repairs, vibration, humidity, and corrosion. During our inspection and maintenance work, we identified and addressed several important issues:
- Defective connections causing voltage drops and intermittent failures.
- Cables with deteriorated insulation, increasing the risk of short circuits.
- Hidden short circuits affecting critical onboard systems.
- Reinforcement of main connections to improve safety and long-term reliability.
PLC Control System Maintenance
The yacht’s PLC control system manages several key functions on board, including:
- Automated sail control.
- Electric windlasses and winches.
- Hydraulic passerelle operation.
- Monitoring of the engine and generator.
We performed calibration adjustments, replaced critical sensors, and completed scheduled maintenance to improve the system’s operating reliability.
