Raymarine E-165 display repair: black screen and backlight failure

In this marine-electronics service case, we repaired a Raymarine E-165 multifunction display (MFD) that had become unusable as a navigation plotter. The owner reported that the screen remained completely black, preventing access to chartplotter functions and other critical navigation information.

Likely cause: the backlight circuit

A common failure mode on ageing multifunction displays is deterioration of the backlight circuit. When the display backlight is operated at maximum brightness for long periods, the circuit runs under higher thermal and electrical stress. Over time, this can shorten component life and eventually result in a screen that appears dead even though other parts of the unit may still be functioning.

Diagnosis and repair

After a detailed inspection and bench diagnosis, we identified the source of the fault in the backlight system and carried out the required repair. The objective was not only to restore illumination, but also to ensure the Raymarine E-165 could operate reliably again as part of the vessel’s navigation suite.

Practical check for owners and captains

If a Raymarine display begins to show intermittent dimming, flickering or heat-related screen issues, reduce the backlight level to around 50% and observe whether stability improves. This is not a repair, but it can reduce load on the backlight circuit and provide useful information before the unit is professionally assessed.

Tips to extend the life of Raymarine MFDs

  • Avoid running the backlight at 100% brightness for extended periods unless conditions require it.
  • Keep the display well ventilated and avoid excessive heat build-up at the helm or nav station.
  • Arrange periodic checks before long passages or charter seasons.
  • Seek specialist support as soon as brightness, flicker or black-screen symptoms appear.
