Technical Challenge: Intellian i9 Antenna Out of Service

Connectivity and entertainment matter on luxury yachts. We recently repaired an Intellian i9 SAT TV antenna on a 90-foot yacht configured to track Astra 19.2° East for Movistar+. The system behaved erratically, frustrating both crew and guests.

Symptoms

The antenna would locate the satellite and begin tracking, but within seconds it lost signal and returned to search mode. This cycle repeated continuously, preventing stable television reception.

Initial Diagnosis

With marine satellite systems, several causes must be considered before parts are replaced:

  • Physical obstruction: a tall neighbouring vessel could block line of sight to the satellite.
  • Tracking frequency changes: the four polarities may require adjustment.
  • Hardware fault: possible failure of the LNB sensor, RF board or control board.

Detailed Investigation and Findings

Inspection showed that the issue was more complex than a simple obstruction or frequency setting. The antenna had multiple hardware faults:

  1. Faulty stepper motor: the elevation motor showed abnormal resistance at certain points of travel.
  2. Damaged control board: the motor’s mechanical resistance had stressed and damaged the control electronics.
  3. ACU out of sync: the Antenna Control Unit was no longer properly synchronised with the rest of the system.

Complete Repair

To restore reliable operation, we carried out a full corrective repair:

  1. Replaced the faulty stepper motor.
  2. Replaced the damaged control board.
  3. Installed a new ACU to ensure correct synchronisation.

Result: Stable Tracking Restored

After the repair, the Intellian i9 returned to normal operation. The antenna now maintains stable tracking of Astra 19.2° East, providing uninterrupted Movistar+ reception for the yacht.

Lessons Learned

This case highlights the importance of a complete diagnostic process. What first looked like a line-of-sight or frequency problem was actually a combination of mechanical and electronic faults requiring a coordinated repair.
